Darth Vader reads John Henry

Another good record I stumbled upon: Scholastic Records presents James Earl Jones reading the story of John Henry ‘An American Legend’ by Ezra Jack Keats. The recording date reads 1975, Pantheon Books. The story was written 10 years earlier in 1965. Produced by Robert Mack and directed by Bernice Chardiet.

James Earl Jones is an actor with an outstanding reputation. His performance in THE GREAT WHITE HOPE received the Tony award on Broadway, and later he was nominated for an Oscar for his recreation of the role on film. Mr. Jones has appeared in numerous other stage, film, and TV productions and is a member of the Advisory Board of the National Council of the Arts.

A Powerful speaker, Mr. Jones narrates this story of the legendary John Henry with and eloquence that will hold children spellbound.

  1. Absolutely cool Adam! I’ve been wanting to hear this again since I bought it at school from one of those book orders when it was new. It brings back so many memories, and I can still hear James voice as clear as when I was young. I remember many of the lines by heart. Thanks again!

  2. Excellent! I haven’t heard this in 35 years. I must have listened to this record a hundred times when I was a kid. This has to be one of the best kid’s recordings ever. Please leave it up on your blog I can’t find the recording anywhere else. Thank you for putting it up here.
